National Informatics Centre: E-Governance

Transport Project

NIC’s remarkable contribution has been computerisation and integration of Regional Transport Offices across the country; enabling issuance of licenses and registration certificates from anywhere in the country, avoiding duplication and fraud. A single unified system, both from the interoperability perspective as well as creating a National Register, NIC has diligently integrated the pieces of software that were built over a period of time into a single unified application, known as Vahan and Sarathi. These were then customised to suit the requirements of individual states. This is one application that has scaled within a targeted time frame and that too on a national level. All of the 1,000 odd RTOs across the country have been computerised, most of the states have made headway in creating state registers and a national register is in place.
