India has nearly 3 million SMEs, accounting for over 50 per cent of industrial output and 42 per cent of India’s total export – employing over 50 per cent of India’s workforce. To enable SMEs to overcome their technological backwardness and to have easier access to newer technologies they need to be given conducive environment, in the present context of globalisation. STPI in its entrepreneurial role works directly with software companies as a service provider. It provides single window clearance and technology incubators introduced by the Government of India giving much needed thrust to the SMEs. It has also helped SMEs develop an outward focus by increasing access to markets outside the state or even the country; developing new tools for technology transfer and business facilitation.
